Groundwork East Durham were initially contacted by Bearpark Residents Group to help the group
develop plans for a play area in their village. As a lack of play areas has been identified in appraisals of all
three villages of the Lower Deerness Valley, it was proposed that funding be sought to produce a play
area strategy for all three villages. Funding was subsequently secured through the Betterplay programme
of the New Opportunities Fund, which distributes National Lottery money for distinctive and innovative
children’s play projects and is managed by Barnardo’s.
In addition to the three strategies, a best practice guide is being produced to help community groups
engage with their young people and record and evidence their findings in order to support funding for their
proposals.
This play strategy aims to improve the play opportunities of children and young people in the Lower
Deerness valley. It seeks to do this by working with these communities to:
1. Identify the best sites in the village to site a play area
2. identify the play needs of the children and young people
3. identify the related needs of parents and carers of young children
4. strengthen / create community groups to respond to these needs through play area designs
5. train the groups to understand what 'play' is: the different types of play children experience; the
different types of provision that can satisfy those needs, and understand constraints
6. facilitate understanding of creative play opportunities of local authority staff where they are the
land-owner and / or maintenance provider in order to agree on play area content
7. have the plans costed to facilitate fundraising for the play areas
8. Produce a best-practice guide that other groups can use to develop a play area strategy for their
village / neighbourhood

These plans were 2003,, whats happening are they going ahead or what.
