Shame to hear that the Workmens club has closed it has been open for a very long time. Does anyone know why it has closed and if it is to stay closed what is going to happen to it.

Yes mate it has closed for good, the brewery has had enough.. All the young'un's used to go in and wrek the place anyway by fighting with anyone who wanted one.. it got to the point where the old men (who's club it was) were scared to drink in there..
Don't be surprised if the place is flattened to make way for new houses..

Whatever goes on with the club would be an improvement!! its been left to go to wreck n ruin for many years, its a huge building with a lot of overheads. i feel sorry for some of the people who have tried to make a go of it over the years. i can vouch for that fact, im nearly as old as some of the toadstools and mushrooms growing out the walls! as for the young people being the cause, yeah right like it hasn't been the case that the beer was that cheap people ( all ages) used to go there to get bladdered then end up scrapping, for at least 25 yr that i know of!

It will be a shame to see Ushaw Moor Club go it held so many good memories for families and generations way gone by. However in it's current state now it is an eye saw and needs flattening as soon as possible. I would have liked the club to have still been flourishing for my own use and the community but unfortuantely as someone has already pointed out to much trouble over the last 20 years or so has ruined what was once one of the best clubs in the County. My Grandfather and his brothers used to drink in the club regular and my Mother used to attend dances / bands during the peak 1960's. The club had a huge dancing area. It will be interesting to see what the new houses / flats look like when the club is flattened. Also of interest to some people the hairdressers (Strands) next to the club will be going down to. Good news is though it will be re built within the new premises.

Thanks for the update, Anthony. I hate to see things change; and yet, I realize everything changes. Still, I'm one who really doesn't like things torn down -
