Hello everyone,
I was born in Ushaw Moor and attended Ushaw Moor Infants School from 1959-62, before the family relocated to Nottinghamshire. On the day we moved I remember several large Pickfords removal wagons coming into the village. Percy and Josie Turnbull and Ernie, Ray Jolly & Family and Ernie & Jean Hope moved with us. I've known them all of my life. I'm researching my family history with the surnames Pearson, Harrison, Holliday, Turner, Fitzpatrick and Turnbull all from the Deerness Valley Villages. Any help would be gratefully received, especially about the Harrison who had eight sons in the late 1800's ....where did they all go? It would be lovely to find some new relatives! The Turnbulls are also a bit of a mystery. My great grandmother Dorothy Elizabeth Harrison, nee Turnbull, I believe was raised at Cornsay Colliery then moved to Sleetburn where she married William Harrison in 1900. They are both buried at Brandon St John's.
I have lots of happy memories of Ushaw Moor, walks along the beck, loads of bluebells, fossil hunting on the pit tip, walks upto the College and Bearpark, seaside trips from the club and watching my dad and his cousins play football near the old station. The men in then family were pigeon racers and my dad and his cousin Ray were very successful as Pearson partners, as was my 2nd cousin Alf Rothwell. My uncle Billy Harrison also flew pigeons. We spent hours at the allotments!
